The Program:

American Haiku, Paul Wiancko

Under This Breath, Tanner Porter

Limestone and Felt, Caroline Shaw

Feature: Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8

Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110, is one of his most powerful and personal works. Composed in just three days in 1960, the quartet is often interpreted as a deeply autobiographical reflection of the composer’s struggles under Soviet oppression. Dedicated "to the victims of fascism and war," its haunting melodies, relentless rhythms, and use of Shostakovich's own musical signature—DSCH—create a profound sense of anguish and defiance. From its ghostly opening to the frenzied finale, the quartet captures both despair and resilience, leaving an indelible impact on listeners
